Cat Calls & Compliments
“Cat Calls and Compliments” takes a slightly humorous and yet thought-provoking approach to the very serious issue of street harassment. The piece examines the fine line between complimenting a stranger and harassing someone. Do you feel offended, uncomfortable, or violated when a stranger says you look nice? What about if they ask you out on a date? Whistle? Where is the line that is too often crossed that makes us feel uncomfortable in our public spaces? “Cat Calls and Compliments” explores that line and leaves the audience torn between humour and recognition, outrage and understanding. About the Artist: Sophia Rabinovitz has been creating work since she could walk and directing since she could speak. She began formally training at the age of six and holds a BFA in Dance, a BA in Anthropology from Temple University and a MA in Dance Cultures from the University of Surrey. Her training in dance consists of a multitude of different forms and her choreography reflects this diversity. Sophia’s choreography is varied in its origin and innovative in its combination of movement styles, such as African, Modern, Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Latin dance. She strongly believes in the power of movement to express ideas, educate, and to encourage discussion about major issues in our society. Artivism Dance Theatre Artivism Dance Theatre aims to generate discussion amongst its audiences using dance theatre to open a dialogue around important social issues. We work with current issues without having a particular demographic in mind through which to view such issues and without a specific agenda of political issues in which to tackle. We believe that dance and theatre have the ability to speak across culture, age, ability, and background like nothing else and our passion for this work is the inspiration for Artivism Dance Theatre. Our goal is to build a company where artists can articulate their intellectuality and intellectuals can express their artistry; where one does not have to be separate from the other.
