"Holdin On" by Artivism Dance Theatre
“Holdin’ On” was created in response to the recent stabbing of a black man and a white woman in Olympia, Washington after a self-proclaimed white supremacist saw them kissing outside of a bar. In this piece we examine how far we have or have not come since the Loving v. Virginia decision ruled interracial marriage legal in the United States. We explore the complexity of emotions that come up for interracial couples when faced with resistance both from outsiders and from those closest to them. How does this resistance reflect the current state of race relations in the United States? "The Rant (Part 1)" at Fly Movement Salon
"The Rant" takes a look inside the minds of three strong, empowered women as they speak to some of the sexism they encounter day to day. Too often we bite our tongues and hold back, afraid to disrupt or antagonize. Maybe it is out of fear of repercussions or maybe we just can't be bothered to explain your ignorance to you, but in this piece we let it all out. What would you say if you could tell em how you really feel? TBH
In "TBH" Artivism Dance Theatre takes a look back at our childhood bullies and how bullying effected us then and now. Bullying takes many forms, in this work we discuss physical, gender, sexuality, and economic bullying. “TBH” is intended for young audiences and is accompanied by an anti-bullying workshop that provides a space for youth to discuss their own conflicts with bullying using movement and text. Yet everyone of all ages have been victims or perpetrators of bullying. We hope our adult audiences will find a connection to this work in their own histories and that we can grow as a community from our individual traumas. Choreography: Derwin May Jr., Daniel Jones Performers: Derwin May Jr., Daniel Jones Music: “Don’t/They Don’t”-Daniel MasterPIECE Jones Artivism Dance Theatre Artivism Dance Theatre aims to generate discussion amongst its audiences using dance theatre to open a dialogue around important social issues. We work with current issues without having a particular demographic in mind through which to view such issues and without a specific agenda of political issues in which to tackle. We believe that dance and theatre have the ability to speak across culture, age, ability, and background like nothing else and our passion for this work is the inspiration for Artivism Dance Theatre. Cat Calls & Compliments
“Cat Calls and Compliments” takes a slightly humorous and yet thought-provoking approach to the very serious issue of street harassment. The piece examines the fine line between complimenting a stranger and harassing someone. Do you feel offended, uncomfortable, or violated when a stranger says you look nice? What about if they ask you out on a date? Whistle? Where is the line that is too often crossed that makes us feel uncomfortable in our public spaces? “Cat Calls and Compliments” explores that line and leaves the audience torn between humour and recognition, outrage and understanding. About the Artist: Sophia Rabinovitz has been creating work since she could walk and directing since she could speak. She began formally training at the age of six and holds a BFA in Dance, a BA in Anthropology from Temple University and a MA in Dance Cultures from the University of Surrey. Her training in dance consists of a multitude of different forms and her choreography reflects this diversity. Sophia’s choreography is varied in its origin and innovative in its combination of movement styles, such as African, Modern, Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Latin dance. She strongly believes in the power of movement to express ideas, educate, and to encourage discussion about major issues in our society. Complicated
In this work, choreographer Sophia Rabinovitz explores the complex realities of being a woman trying to "have it all". A homemaker, a working woman, a mother... something has to give. What does it mean to make hard, often unspoken, choices? This work sheds light on these choices, without judgement, but with compassion and understanding to the complexities of choice. Artivism Dance Theatre’s latest project takes on the things ‘we’ as a collective and as a greater society do not talk about and why. In this age of pseudo-reality fueled by social media and fake news; what does it mean to be truly honest with ourselves and with others? Though we swim constantly in a stream of selfies and 120 character missives there remain vulnerable areas we do not discuss publicly. In a world where our whole lives are made public, what do we not talk about and why?
