General Terms

Artivism

The intersection of art and activism, where artistic expression is used as a tool for social and political change.

Attribution

The act of crediting the creator of a work when reusing it. Required for most Creative Commons licenses.

Avant-gardes

Experimental artistic movements that push boundaries and challenge conventional norms in art and culture.

Collection

A curated group of related media items organized around a theme, movement, or topic.

Collectives

Groups of artists, activists, or creators who work together collaboratively, often sharing resources and decision-making.

Commons

Content that is freely available for reuse under open licenses or in the public domain.

Countercultures

Subcultures whose values and behaviors differ substantially from those of mainstream society, often in opposition to dominant cultural norms.

Creative Commons

A nonprofit organization that provides free, standardized licenses for sharing creative works. Common license types include CC0 (public domain dedication), CC BY (attribution required), CC BY-SA (attribution and share-alike), CC BY-NC (attribution, non-commercial), and CC BY-ND (attribution, no derivatives).

Derivative Work

A work based on or derived from another work, such as a translation, adaptation, or remix.

Geocoding

The process of converting location names or addresses into geographic coordinates.

Indexing

The process of organizing content for fast retrieval and search, creating searchable metadata.

License

Legal permission to use, modify, or distribute a creative work under specified conditions.

Map

A geographic visualization tool that displays content locations on an interactive map.

Metadata

Structured information about a media item, including title, author, date, location, license, and description.

Movements

Social or political movements organized around shared goals and collective action, often seeking social change or cultural transformation.

Public Domain

Works that are not protected by copyright, either because copyright expired or was dedicated to the public.

Search

The primary tool for finding content using keywords, operators, and filters.

Timeline

A visualization tool that displays content distribution over time, showing trends and patterns.

Takedown

The process of removing content from the archive at the request of rights holders.
