Next Steps: How To Stop These Pipelines
As “Walking the Line: Into the Heart of Virginia” ponders right next actions, we look back to our early interviews for inspiration to keep on truckin’. Featuring landowner, Ernie Reed of Wild Virginia and with Lakshmi Fjord of Friends of Buckingham, Joseph Jeeva Abbate of Yogaville Environmental Solutions, Kirk Bowers of Virginia Sierra Club and Joyce Burton of Friends of Nelson. Since our June 23 interview with Ernie Reed, new public hearings have been announced by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for August. While these hearings are a bit of a sham, we still must turn out for them in force. Will you be one of the 1,000 people we need on each of these five dates? Stay tuned for how we will join together to send a clear and powerful message at these hearings. This fight will take all of all of us! #noACP #noMVP

Circle of Protection: Buckingham - Weekly Interfaith Prayer Vigil
In 2018, ARTivism Virginia produced some twenty Circles of Protection – weekly interfaith prayer vigils to protect Buckingham County, Virginia from the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline and its associated Buckingham Compressor Station in Union Hill. Allies from across the state and region came to expect neighbors, prayer, story, poetry and song. These circles were an inspiring first landing for those new to the struggle to stop ACP in the name of environmental justice. They also lifted up those who were long into and weary from this good, long fight. The vigils were in open air on the grounds of Union Hill & Union Grove Baptist Churches, Buckingham, VA. On the first Sundays of the month we shared a loaves and fishes pot luck in the church basement. All were welcome.

Happy Pipeline Owners
As we celebrate the death of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline we offer again this little love letter to the broad, diverse community fighting to stop construction of the Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast fracked gas pipelines and especially to all the Southern country women who may look easy to fool, but almost never are. Without their ferocity and tenacity, ACP would never have been stopped and it is that same quality which will end MVP. A comedic look at how pipeline companies treat directly impacted landowners - or try to. And yes Aaron Ruby of Dominion Power, your world class smarm inspired our Mr. Rube. We hope it makes you laugh. Then fight.

Make Moves
Direct action to stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline began with the Peter’s Mountain tree sit in February, 2018. “Deckard” whose sit has been guarded and blocked from resupply of food and water for over a month, reminds us that this fight will take all of us, no matter what we’ve got to give. Stand with Red: It's a Family Affair
Those taking direct action to block construction of fracked gas pipelines in Virginia are peaceful and informed. They are diverse and they are us. “Stand with Red: It’s a Family Affair” from Water is life. Protect it. allows you to meet one marriage at the center of this courage. The Terry family of Bent Mountain gladly gave private land for the local school, now community center, and again gave land to power lines because these sacrifices benefited the local common good. They are resisting the MVP because it harms the local good, the water future, and benefits only a private out of state corporation. Please support all those protecting your water with your presence, your prayers and your support.

Stand with Union Hill: Concert of Prayer
The Stand with Union Hill Concert of Prayer on December 18, 2018 was an interfaith prayer vigil to lift protection against the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline Buckingham Compressor Station in Union Hill, Virginia, on the eve of an important meeting by the Department of Environmental Quality's Air Pollution Control Board. The next day, the Air Pollution Control Board and the Virginia DEQ manage to dodge valid legal challenges to their procedure, public outrage over Governor Northam’s recent stacking of board members in Dominion Energy's favor, and the presence of over 150 concerned citizens by not voting, and by declaring a new public comment period for the proposed ACP compressor station at Union Hill. Help us turn this setback into a victory by signing the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/va-air-pollu... And come with us again on January 8, 2019 to seek reason and justice when the Air Board may finally vote on the air permit for the station, 10:00AM, DoubleTree by Hilton Richmond-Midlothian, James River Parlor G/H, 1021 Koger Center Boulevard, Richmond, Virginia 23235 At 54,000 horsepower, the proposed compressor station, a giant, even by industry standards, has been sited in the center of an historic African American freedman community on a former slave plantation and represents a stark example of environmental injustice.
ARTivism Virginia

Stand with Union Hill: Our Air, Our Lives
Join your neighbors to stop the proposed ACP Compressor Station that would endanger and diminish the health and land values of all residents of Buckingham County and destroy the lives of the historic African American community of Union Hill. The next challenge is to deny the air permit for the compressor station and there are many ways to do just that. Without the compressor station, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, a robbery of and threat to all Virginians, cannot be built. At 54,000 + horse power, this proposed compressor station, a giant one, even by industry standards, would bring loud constant noise and release toxic poisons into Buckingham’s air and water. The health of children is particularly vulnerable to the methane, formaldehyde, arsenic, benzene, xylene and other compounds the compressor will regularly release. The station creates a fire and explosion hazard completely beyond the capacity of distant volunteer firefighters, has few staff on site, and would be built on a former slave plantation atop the probably unmarked slave graves of Union Hill ancestors. "To The River" – The SUN SiNG Collective (#NoPipeline Anthem / #NoMVP #NoACP)
"To the River", a new no pipeline anthem, was written by Joshua Vana, arranged and performed by the SUN SiNG Collective, and filmed by Sarah Hazlegrove. It premiered at the SUN SiNG Concert in Charlottesville, Virginia on April 26th, 2019. There was no studio time in the creation of this song recording and video. "To The River" was recorded and filmed along the routes of the Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast Pipelines in areas of devastation using the Sun Bus, a mobile sonic resistance unit equipped with a solar-powered, concert-level recording and public address system, designed by SUN SiNG Collective member Graham Smith-White. Produced by ARTivism Virginia, the SUN SiNG Collective, at its core, is a group of eight professional musicians from across Virginia who came together to create and perform music to inspire resistance to new fossil infrastructure. For years, the collective members have given their time and talent to stop the corrupt robbery of the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley fracked gas pipelines. Their work provides an accurate translation of complex regulatory, scientific and political fact into heart messages that welcome the newcomer, sustain the long fighter and inspire action. Like ARTivism Virginia, the collective is enriched by creative collaboration with fine artists, videographers, designers and puppet masters from across the mid-Atlantic region and seeks to serve environmental groups by providing a supported connection between artists and activists. Thanks to all who made this possible. There were 60 volunteers in and in front of the Jefferson Theater on April 26th, 2019, and every single one of them was generous, talented and essential. Together we joined our joy with our concern. We invite you to do the same. Special thanks to all of the hard working pipeline fighters who assisted in the filming of this video. ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- LYRICS: I’ll take you to the river / Tell you what I see I see the truth in the water / Shining back up at me Everything in time / Since the world began Feel it breathing in the air / Feel it buried in the land I’ll take you to the river / Tell you what I hear I hear the thunder in the distance / I hear the river say a prayer Here come the company man / Here come that big machine Here come the murder of the mountain / Here come me in between I’ll take you to the river / I’ll take you to the truth Every life in the water running through you What are you gonna hold to / What are you gonna do I’ll take you to the river / I’ll take you to the truth Now look up on the ridge / See the river come down Watch it carve through the country / And roll right into town Everything in time / Running through our veins We got the river running through us / And no river runs in vain I’ll take you to the river / I’ll take you to the truth Every life in the water running through you What are you gonna hold to / What are you gonna do I’ll take you to the river / I’ll take you to the truth I’ll take you to the river / I’ll take you to the truth Every life in the water running through you What are you gonna hold to / What are you gonna do I’ll take you to the river / I’ll take you to the truth I’ll take you to the river / I’ll take you to the truth I’ll take you to the river / Tell you what I hear I hear the thunder in the distance / I hear the river say a prayer Copyright 2019 SUN SiNG Collective ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- Videography: Sarah Hazlegrove Executive Director: Graham Smith-White Artistic Director: Kay Ferguson, ARTivism Virginia Mixing: Carolyn Malachi / artivismvirginia / artivism_virginia http://www.vimeo.com/artivismvirginia The SUN SiNG Collective is: Bernadette "BJ" Lark (vocals) Camry Harris (drums, percussion, vocals) Emily Blankenship-Tucker (vocals, keyboards, fiddle) Gabe Gavin (bass, percussion) Graham Smith-White (banjo, bass, percussion, engineering & production) Joshua Vana (guitars, vocals) Laney Sullivan (vocals, keyboards and harmonium) Lilly Bechtel (vocals) #ToTheRiver #SUNSiNG #noMVP #noMVPSouthgate #noACP #WaterIsLife #SunBus #ARTivism #ARTivismVA #WEWILLWIN

Red Terry Takes A Stand
Grandmother Red Terry of Bent Mountain, Virginia made a stand to protect land that had been in her family for seven generations from the Mountain Valley fracked gas pipeline, and an immoral use of eminent domain for private gain. For thirty-five days in the spring of 2018, she occupied a tree stand on her family’s land – as did her daughter, Minor Terry, respectively – blocking the advance of the pipeline and the razing of the land. Red and Minor’s tree stands were blocked off by Roanoke County and Virginia State Police, in collusion with MVP’s private security firm Global Security, and with additional assistance from the Virginia Fusion Center. Community members rallied in support of the Terrys, offering support in any way they could, and the blockade gained the attention of national press from the Washington Post to Democracy Now! #StandWithRed #DefendWithMinor #noMVP

This Fight Is Now
Follow one Mountain Valley Pipeline resistor from Southwest Virginia as she journeys to stand with the Union Hill Community of Buckingham County in their resistance against the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and its proposed compressor station. Bernadette "BJ" Lark speaks a simple and profound truth to those resisting new fossil fuel infrastructure anywhere: "We will win. Because if we lose - there won't be anyone here to win." "This Fight is Now" is a collaboration of ARTivism Virginia and Lights and Years. On May, 17th, 2019, Virginians and allies from the region gathered in Richmond, Virginia, and walked with the Buckingham County community of Union Hill to demand environmental justice, and a stop to the proposed Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley fracked gas pipelines. They were joined by William Barber, III and Karenna Gore of the Center for Earth Ethics. Returning to the route across the Robert E. Lee Bridge traveled by civil rights advocates 51 years before during Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic Poor People’s Campaign march to Washington D.C., hundreds called for an end to environmental racism and new fossil fuel infrastructure that threatens our ability to protect our homes, our water, and our children's future. Together, We Are Stronger
The Climate Change line in the sand is drawn in Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina along the routes of the unneeded Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast fracked gas pipelines. In September, 2019, grassroots organizations in these three states collaborated to create two "No Pipeline" events within the Global Climate Strike Week. "Circle of Protection: Bent Mountain" was produced by ARTivism Virginia to bring water protectors together in real time to share stories, strategy, grief, art, and song and to launch and support the "Climate Emergency: Tri-State No Pipeline Strike" the following day in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. Crowned in gold with a black mask and a loud buzzy voice, the Golden-Winged Warbler is as beautiful as it is unmistakable--though it is becoming harder and harder to find them. These birds have been in sharp decline in recent years, with habitat loss a potentially significant factor. Who Will Sing For Me? BJ Brown Will.
SUN SiNG Collective member Bernadette "BJ" Brown speaks to why she is giving her time and talent to help stop fracked gas pipelines in Virginia. Bernadette's highest honor is to humbly serve. Growing up the daughter of a pastor and missionary, and as the mother of three beautiful children, she has from birth been surrounded by tremendous acts of love, service, and music. Bernadette currently serves as Youth Educator for the Jefferson Center Music Lab Youth Gospel Performance Band in Roanoke, Virginia. Bernadette is the visionary, and lead organizer of commUNITY ARTSreach. She has served as Lucy Addison Middle School Gospel Choir director for over eight years, and Choir Director for Patrick Henry High School Gospel Choir. She's also dedicated to fellowship at Green Temple in Salem, Virginia, where love leads. Bernadette currently holds an MBA degree, with a concentration in Human Resources (minor degree study Master concentration in Education), DECA, Delta Theta Sigma member. Her past work has included both national and international performances. She's had lead and supporting roles in numerous productions including Broadway plays and originals works, with theater and musical production appearances at the Lipscomb University-Dove Award in Nashville, Tennessee, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City, Bobby Jones Presents - Word Network in New Orleans, Louisiana, New Millennium Studios Tim Reid Productions, Shoreditch in London, the UK Choir Fest in Wales, and many more. Each member of the SUN SiNG Collective has chosen to sing for one of ten selected pipeline endangered critters along the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipeline routes. Bernadette sings for the Cerulean Warbler, a tiny blue gem belonging to the warbler family. This small songbird breeds and migrates through Western Virginia’s mountains, gleaning insects from the tops of trees in the mountain forests. Cerulean warbler numbers, like many forest songbirds, have been declining in recent years – and habitat loss is a significant factor. Who Will Sing for Me? Camry Harris Will.
SUN SiNG Collective member Camry Harris speaks to why he is giving his time and talent to help stop fracked gas pipelines in Virginia. Hailing from Martinsville, Virginia, Camry has been a touring drummer for the last five years. Music has been is life and is his passion. “When I first joined the Sun Sing Collective, I had no clue what I was walking into, but as time went on and I started to spend time with all the other musicians that were way more knowledgeable than I was, my eyes were opened. I didn’t realize how much destruction the construction of the pipelines would cause to our beautiful land and water and to our friends and families. It breaks my heart to see how far money and greed can drive people to take advantage of amazing people all around the world. We need to stop this now!” Each member of the SUN SiNG Collective has chosen to sing for one of ten selected pipeline endangered critters along the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipeline routes. Camry sings for The Mitchell’s Satyr. This deceptively decorated butterfly is one of the few insects that have an “endangered” label--not because insects aren’t endangered, but because we know so little about them. Who Will Sing For Me? Emily Blankenship-Tucker Will.
SUN SiNG Collective member Emily Blankenship-Tucker speaks to why she is giving her time and talent to help stop fracked gas pipelines in Virginia. Emily is a musician and theatre artist from Ferrum, Virginia. She currently tours and records with the all-female vocal trio After Jack, teaches and music directs in the Music and Theatre departments at Ferrum College, and freelances as a session musician and voiceover artist. She also keeps up with a small farm and her two-year-old son. In addition to her songwriting credits, she has composed the scores for several full-length musicals. Her theatrical credits include thirteen years as an actor and music director in the Jack Tale Players, dramatizing traditional Appalachian stories. Additionally, she has directed or performed in more than seventy-five theatrical productions during her career. Emily has joined the pipeline resistance movement after being inspired by the direct actions of her neighbors and community members. She hopes that her work will similarly inspire others to join the movement toward justice and sustainability. Each member of the SUN SiNG collective has chosen to sing for one of ten selected pipeline endangered critters along the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipeline routes. Emily has chosen the Rusty Blackbird. Wading along the edges of Virginia’s forested wetlands, Rusty Blackbirds may at a glance resemble more common birds such as grackles – but they actually represent one of the largest observed declines in an avian population over the last 40 years. The exact reason is undetermined, but a likely culprit is habitat destruction. These elegant blackbirds breed in the boreal tundra of Canada, and almost 80% of their known population winters in the Southeastern US. Who Will Sing For Me? Gabe Gavin Will.
Gabe Gavin is serving the SUN SiNG Collective as bass player and his band, Bhakti Boyz, will appear as guest artists for the SUN SiNG Concert on April 26th, 2019 – here he speaks to why he is giving his time and talent to help stop fracked gas pipelines in Virginia. Gabe Gavin has been a resident of Charlottesville for the past eleven years, working as a massage therapist and performing musician. He is co-founder of the local reggae band Positive Collective, and more recently a new Kirtan band, Bhakti Boyz. For Gabe, music is a spiritual journey, the gathering together with others in cooperation to create harmony and resonance. Getting involved in “ARTivism”, the use of creative expression as part of the activist movement, is a return to his roots. He spent much of his childhood attending rallies, marches, and demonstrations in support of civil rights and the passing of the Equal Rights Amendment. In 1990, during his senior year of high school, he was arrested for civil disobedience, blocking the door to an army recruitment center in protest of the first Persian Gulf War. After a long hiatus from activism, he is grateful to participate in the efforts of pipeline resistance, re-building community, re-empowering citizenship, and reclaiming dominion of individual and collective rights over the destructive, divisive, and unsustainable culture of corporate greed, political corruption, and patriarchal dogma. He seeks to use music to help foster the experience of UnIty that will help transform the divide and rule paradigm. Each member of the SUN SiNG Collective has chosen to sing for one of ten selected pipeline endangered critters along the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipeline routes. Gabe sings for the Rusty-patched Bumblebee. While all pollinators are facing enormous challenges today, the Rusty-patched Bumblebee is especially threatened, with populations thought to be down almost 90% in the past 20 years. This large eusocial bee builds its nests underground, and is one of many pollinators that plants (including those in our food system) rely on to reproduce. As they decline, those plants suffer as well--ultimately affecting those organisms that depend on plants, including us. Who Will Sing for Me? Joshua Vana . SUN SiNG Concert
Joshua Vana is serving the SUN SiNG Collective with vocals and lead guitar. He is the author of the new No Pipeline Anthem, "To the River" and his band Resounder will be guest artists at the SUN SiNG Concert on April 26th, 2019 – here hes peaks to why he is giving his time and talent to help stop fracked gas pipelines in Virginia. Joshua Vana is an activist, organizer, and musician living in Rockingham County, the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Working with RAPTORS, the Rockingham Alliance for the Protection & Transformation of Our Resources & Society, he's been involved in the resistance to the Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast Pipelines for two and a half years. He's been a worker-owner of the Little Grill Collective, one of Harrisonburg's most beloved gathering places, as well as a touring and recording guitarist of five years with the Nashville-based songwriter Nora Jane Struthers. Acknowledging that some things never change, and that history repeats itself, Joshua is thrilled to collaborate with fellow artists in Virginia with the understanding that movements need music and art – and that the stories of resistance must be told by the communities fighting for survival, equity, and writing their own history. Joshua sings for the Northern Saw-whet Owl. This small, secretive owl is found across North America in mature forests. Male owls charmingly woo potential mates with gifts of dead mice and hooting calls, and the pair work together to raise their chicks. The Southern Appalachian population – including here in Virginia – is thought to be in decline due to habitat loss. The SUN SiNG Concert is April 26th, 2019, starting at 6:00PM (doors at 5:00PM) at the Jefferson Theater, Charlottesville, Virginia. Who Will Sing For Me? Laney Sullivan Will.
SUN SiNG Collective member Laney Sullivan speaks to why she is giving her time and talent to help stop fracked gas pipelines in Virginia. Laney is a musician and activist from Richmond, Virginia. She has dedicated her life work to learning more about environmental systems and her place in it all. How can we harmonize and understand ourselves as part of nature? Laney is often on tour with her band Høly River (formerly Lobo Marino), and is otherwise found at home in the garden of the Earthfolk Collective. Each member of the SUN SiNG Collective has chosen to sing for one of ten selected pipeline endangered critters along the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipeline routes. Laney sings for the Spotted Turtle. Living in small, scattered populations across Virginia’s remaining wetlands, the Spotted Turtle is a mostly carnivorous denizen of shallow, soft-bottomed waters. Like many reptiles, temperature of the nest plays a role in determining the sex of the turtle hatchlings. These turtles are threatened by the continuous loss of their wetland habitat. The SUN SiNG Concert is April 26th, 2019, starting at 6:00PM (doors at 5:00PM) at the Jefferson Theater, Charlottesville, Virginia. Who Will Sing For Me? Lilly "Bird" Bechtel Will.
Lilly "Bird" Bechtel is serving the SUN SiNG Collective as singer, songwriter, and speaks to why she is giving her time and talent to help stop fracked gas pipelines in Virginia. Lilly is a Writer, Musician, and Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Instructor with 12 years of experience offering Yoga and Creative Writing Workshops in Yoga studios, Correctional facilities, Rehabilitation centers, and Veteran’s hospitals. Her writing exploring the relationship between yoga, art, and social change has appeared in USA Today, The Brooklyn Rail, elephant journal, Best Practices for Yoga with Veterans, The Huffington Post, and The Faster Times. Lilly currently offers a Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Class at Common Ground Healing Arts as well at Region Ten’s Addiction Recovery Center and The Wellness Center in Charlottesville, VA. She is also pursuing her MFA in poetry as well as finishing a record of original music. A child of the Blue Ridge, Lilly is delighted to bring her work as an artist to bear on the work of defending our land, our water, and the rights of Virginians to build a future we can live in. Each member of the SUN SiNG Collective has chosen to sing for one of ten selected pipeline endangered critters along the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipeline routes. Lilly sings for the Gray Fox, which is found all across North America. Smaller and more agile than its more well-known red cousin, the Gray Fox is the only American canid known to climb trees. While its overall numbers are stable, Gray Foxes have declined in the Eastern US due to forest fragmentation, and are one of many mammals frequently killed inadvertently by cars and eating poisoned rats. Who Will Sing For Me? Lily Lamberta Will.
SUN SiNG Collective member Lily Lamberta speaks to why she is giving her time and talent to help stop fracked gas pipelines in Virginia. Lily Lamberta is a political puppeteer, using collaborative art and theater as a means to work with communities expressing a creative voice to social justice and environmental issues. She is from Richmond, Virginia, where she is the director and master puppeteer for her political puppet theater All The Saints Theater Company. She uses large scale paper-mache puppets, sculpture, music, banners and flags to parade, protest, and celebrate. She believes that spontaneity and collaborative art and theater are the best ways to poke satire at the corruption of capitalism, bigotry, systemic racism, the prison industrial complex, and pro-pipeline companies. Lily uses all recycled and found goods to make her massive puppets. She is most recognized for starting the Halloween Parade in Richmond that she has put on for 13 years. Her New Orleans-style parade pageantry is her favorite style of political expression. She has been working with world famous Bread and Puppet Theater for 20 years! She has two kids who believe her work is important, and for that, she is grateful. Each member of the SUN SiNG Collective has chosen to sing for one of ten selected pipeline endangered critters along the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipeline routes. Lily sings and creates for the Virginia Big-eared Bat, which lives up to its name with enormous ears that dwarf its head. These bats use their remarkable echolocation to find and eat moths and other flying insects along the edges of the canopy, and live and raise their families in caves along the Appalachian ridge in Southwest Virginia. However, they are extremely sensitive to human activity, and populations dissipate in caves where habitat is frequently disturbed. The SUN SiNG Concert is April 26th, 2019, starting at 6:00PM (doors at 5:00PM) at the Jefferson Theater, Charlottesville, Virginia. Who Will Sing For Me? Virginia Greene Will.
Virginia Greene is serving the SUN SiNG collective as wildlife painter, graphic designer, and consultant, and speaks to why she is giving her time and talent to help stop fracked gas pipelines in Virginia. Virginia Greene is a nature artist with a background in biology and zoology. She grew up playing outside and watching animals, and those are still her favorite things to do. Virginia has biology degrees from Virginia Tech and William and Mary, where she researched bird behavior, and an illustration degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She loves to work in all kinds of media, including ink, watercolor, acrylic, and graphite, and she loves to make illustrations for books and media, traditional paintings, and educational comics about nature. She lives and works full-time on her art in Charlottesville, Virginia. She spends as much time outside as she can. Each member of the SUN SiNG Collective has chosen to sing for one of ten selected pipeline endangered critters along the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipeline routes. Virginia paints for the Cow Knob Salamander, a secretive amphibian that makes its home under rocks and logs in deciduous forests. Keeping out of the sun by day, it spends its evenings hunting for insects in the leaf litter. It is found only in a few spots in the Blue Ridge mountains between Virginia and West Virginia, and its population is tiny and unstable. Amphibians in general are very sensitive to changes in local waterways, and especially to water quality--and the future of this unique salamander remains uncertain. The SUN SiNG Concert is April 26th, 2019, starting at 6:00PM (doors at 5:00PM) at the Jefferson Theater, Charlottesville, Virginia. Tell the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) not to accept MVP’s variance requests to allow them to bore under waterways! Inadequate permitting and enforcement have allowed MVP to criminally ignore state and federal water quality standards for nearly two years – and now MVP wants to have what rules are left thrown to the wind so they can ram through their dangerous project, destroying the waterways and wild places that stand in their way. Fire On The Mountain
“Fire on the Mountain” is a seven-minute mini-documentary of one family’s fight to protect their home from the Mountain Valley Pipeline in Southwest Virginia. Red Terry and her daughter, Minor, staged a tree sit resistance on their farm in spring of 2018, and their story became a spark that helped bring the lawlessness and corruption of this project and others like it to national and international attention. Produced by ARTivism Virginia and Lights & Years and shot in September of 2019 at a tri-state gathering of resistors to MVP and the recently canceled Atlantic Coast Pipeline, the film documents the family’s stand, fiery character, and what the threat of explosion means for their lives. The bombshell cancellation of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline on Sunday, July 5th, 2020, immediately followed by judicial suspension of the Dakota Access and Keystone XL Pipelines, brings into serious question whether MVP will be, and should be, the next to fail. We think yes. Lacking five key permits, years behind schedule, billions over budget, and charged with over 300 violations of their water permit, the MVP is not needed and is a threat to all people and all water in the Virginia and North Carolina region it is attempting to occupy. Starting Thursday, April 9th, and continuing every other Thursday, the SUN SiNG Collective will be broadcasting from their respective locations across Virginia for "SUN SiNG iN PLACE: Thursday Night Bi-Weekly Concert Series." We'll be bringing you an hour of music, spoken word, pipeline updates and action opportunities straight to your living room, kitchen, or wherever you may be tuning in from, every other Thursday! We'll be broadcasting music from individual Collective members and those they're quarantined with, as well as guest ARTivists and leaders in the fight against the Mountain Valley, Atlantic Coast, and MVP Southgate pipelines, and other threatening fracked gas infrastructure in our region. The SUN SiNG Collective is a group of musicians and visual artists formed in 2019 to create, record, and perform original material to support the work of the broad, deep, and growing coalition fighting fracked gas infrastructure. The group, led by co-producers Graham Smith-White and Kay Ferguson, collectively arranged and remotely recorded "To The River," and original song by member Joshua Vana, using the Sun Bus, an off-road vehicle with solar-powered recording and concert-level sound capability. Their work last spring culminated at the SUN SiNG Concert in Charlottesville, Virginia, and the music ensemble has continued to show up to support those fighting for environmental justice in our region. Each concert, we'll be posting information about our special guests and partners. This week, we were joined by: Trish McLawhorn of Southwest Virginia with a call to halt Mountain Valley Pipeline construction during stay at home orders: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/p... https://bluevirginia.us/2020/04/new-p... The Appalachian Trail Is Not For Sale! ARTivism Weekly Protection, 12.10.2020
On August 17th, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) announced a “Voluntary Conservation Stewardship Agreement” for $19.5M, formed without the knowledge of ATC members. This was a shock after the ATC's six years of opposition to the MVP and the MVP’s destruction to the viewsheds and the Appalachian National Historic Trail in Southern WV and Southwest VA. Please sign and share this petition by December 15th, 2020, urging the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to make the entire text of the “Voluntary Stewardship Agreement” available to every ATC member and to the public. Big Things Coming from the SUN SiNG Collective in Spring 2021!
In times of togetherness, as well as great distance... The SUN SiNG Collective is a group of professional musicians from across Virginia (and DC), who came together to create and perform music to inspire resistance to new fossil fuel infrastructure. From the band's release of the "To The River" no-pipeline anthem and SUN SiNG Concert in the spring of 2019, through ten online concerts in 2020 in partnership with coalition members and ARTivists from the region, a mighty good noise has been raised to beat the Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast Pipelines, and other dangerous, destructive projects fueling the climate crisis and environmental injustice. Through storm and struggle, the work (and music) continues – And big things are coming in the spring of 2021! Please join us for our SUN SiNG iN PLACE Earth Day Concert on Thursday, April 22nd at 7PM Eastern (link below), and stay tuned for a NEW SONG release! No MVP Southgate Lambert Compressor Station! Pittsylvania County, Virginia – Zoom Webinar – 2.2.2021
On February 2, 2021, the Pittsylvania County, Virginia NAACP hosted a public education Zoom meeting on the proposed MVP Southgate Lambert Compressor Station for their community. This is a recording of that meeting. ARTivism Virginia was honored to assist with this gathering and the expert collaborators who spoke and answered questions. Those speakers included Karen Campblin, Environmental and Climate Justice Chair for the VA State Conference NAACP, Dr. Mary Finley Brook, Associate Professor of Geography and the Environment at the University of Richmond, Lynn Godfrey, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter's Community Outreach Coordinator for Stop the Pipelines campaigns and Mark Sabath, senior attorney with SELC in Charlottesville. The meeting was convened and facilitated by Anita Royston, Chairwoman of the Pittsylvania NAACP and Elizabeth Jones, Chair of the Pittsylvania NAACP’s Environmental Justice Committee. Gratitude for all 51 participants. Once again, we see a community scrambling to prepare for an in-progress permitting process without adequate or advance notification or information from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality or from the applicant, MVP Southgate. Once again, we see environmental justice being treated as a box to be checked. The first public hearing for the Lambert Compressor Station will take place Monday, February 8, 2021 at 6:00PM. Register to attend and/or make a public comment here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/regi... More information on the Feb 8th public hearing here – DEQ NOTICE: https://www.deq.virginia.gov/permits-... Concerned Virginians are encouraged to file a written public comment before March 10, 2021 and information for that is here: https://godanriver.com/opinion/letter... Now is not the time to grant an air permit for the proposed Lambert Compressor Station in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. The proposed Lambert Compressor Station would power Mountain Valley Pipeline Southgate before the entire project, including MVP main line has permits to cross Virginia and North Carolina waterways. Another rural community without extensive broadband being targeted by a noisy unhealthy fracked gas compressor station in the middle of a pandemic and a climate crisis? That would be no. Show up and say so! Time to Choose Our Future: #NoMVP
On December 11, 2021, more than three hundred water protectors gathered at Dogwood Dell Amphitheater in Richmond, Virginia for a Violation Vigil to bring visual and spoken witness to the hundreds of harmful water violations already committed by the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP). Their conclusion? The State Water Control Board must not approve a new water permit for this fracked gas construction project when it meets Tuesday, December 14 in Richmond. The Violation Vigil featured keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II of the Poor People’s Campaign and Repairers of the Breach, as well as coalition leaders, powerful musical performances, puppetry and art. Perhaps most powerful was the reading by 300 individuals from across the region of one documented violation - where and when it occurred and what kind of damage was caused. This ritual gave voice to a large and diverse community of mutual respect and fierce determination. If completed, MVP greenhouse gas emissions would equal 23 coal fired power plants and would damage the habitats of endangered and threatened species, inevitably adding more harm and further clogging of pristine and sensitive waterways with sediment and construction runoff. The Virginia State Water Control Board will vote to either approve or deny this Clean Water Act permit on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 in Richmond, Virginia. Water protectors are needed. Details are below: State Water Control Board Meeting Tuesday, December 14, 2021, 10:00 AM Gallery, Community College Workforce Alliance 1651 East Parham Road, Richmond, VA 23228 The Violation Vigil to Stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline featured: Rev. Welcome To The Water Quilt Project!
ARTivism Virginia, in collaboration with Appalachian Voices, POWHR, Haw River Assembly (NC) and Preserve Monroe (WV) is pleased to invite you to participate in the Water Quilt Project to honor and protect the waterways of Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina threatened by the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Water protectors from these directly impacted regions as well as anyone from around the globe are invited. There are many ways to participate and we hope you will find your own way among them. To learn more and participate in the project fill out this form: www.tinyurl.com/WaterQuiltProject Individuals can create a square for the Water Quilt that gives voice to the water or the waterway they love and value. Organizations and faith communities can endorse the project as Patchwork Partners. All can contribute a short video or photo for our “Weaving Waters” song video. Anyone can attend one of three monthly “Stitching Story & Silence Circles” and share their story, their quilt square creation or just a quiet time to sew together in this time of distance and concern. You can choose to make a square for a regional neighbor who is directly impacted or who is working to protect our water future in other ways. We hope many will invite others to join the project including and especially those who may not yet be aware of the Mountain Valley Pipeline challenge. Follow the Water Quilt Project here: ARTivism on Facebook: / artivismvirginia YouTube: / artivismvirginia Email us with your questions and ideas here: waterquiltproject@gmail.com The Water Quilt squares will be assembled by ARTivism Virginia and completed squares should be in our hands by May 1st, 2021. How and when we fully finish and bring the Water Quilt to our communities is, of course, pandemic safety dependent, but we dream of a quilting bee gathering by the banks of a Virginia river come June. If this cannot be, we will send the Quilt on tour to a safe outdoor space near you. Join us! Which side are you on, now / Which side are you on? In the capitol the governor’s bosses / the polluters write the laws The lobbyists line their pockets / While they serve corruption’s cause Now the halls of power want “Right To Work” / They’re union-busting lies We need working folks’ solidarity / And our labor organized! In the trees up in the mountains / Brave resistors make their stand To defend our planet’s future / Our water, air and land The judge lays down their fines / Five hundred dollars everyday While the richest nation in history / Politicians look away Now waters rise, smoke fills the skies / there’s a choice we got to make A just transition and a Green New Deal / is the only road to take! #WhichSideAreYouOn written by Florence Reece. We're Not Having It. #StopMVP
We're not having it. After Mountain Valley Pipeline's U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permits have once again been vacated by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, the path for MVP to ever be finished is disappearing. These legal victories have been made possible by grassroots coalition building, a diversity of tactics, and the implacable will of community defenders and water protectors. #WeWillWin. Renewal of Resistance: An Evening with #StopMVP ARTivists - January 31, 2023
“Renewal of Resistance: An Evening with #StopMVP ARTivists” was held on January 31, 2023 to replenish the movement in the New Year to stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline & MVP Southgate. After FOUR victories against Senator Joe Manchin’s Dirty Deal in 2022, among other victories and setbacks, this resistance – heading into its tenth year – could use an artful boost! The movement has been consistently bolstered by the work of artists all across Appalachia and the Piedmont, and together we're renewing our commitment once again to beating MVP & MVP Southgate! “Renewal of Resistance” gathered people on Zoom from all over the country to hear the voices, see the dances, and feel the words of amazing artists from Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Hosted by Callie Pruett of acclaimed podcast Appodlachia, this event featured poetry readings by Crystal Good, Mara Robbins, and Steven Licardi; musical performances by BJ Lark and Charly Lowry; a dance performance by Sebrena Williamson and Fiona O’Brien; and art by Laura Saunders and Alicia Aldaz.
